Graduate students in the final year of their dissertation must make significant progress toward the dissertation. Fellows teach a maximum of one course per semester.

Stipends and Allowances
Fellows receive an annual stipend of $40,000 as well as allowances for housing ($20,000), research ($2,000), and one-time relocation ($3,000). The University also provides a medical and dental benefits package.

WRITING A RESEARCH PROPOSAL

When you are applying for a research degree, like the PhD, you will very probably have to write a research proposal as a part of your application file. A PhD is awarded mainly as the result of your making a genuine contribution to the state of knowledge in a field of your choice. Even though this is not the Nobel Prize yet, getting the degree means you h… Continue

Technology in Schools - a rebuttal

In response to a colleagues comment regarding technology in the schools: “there are many practical and efficient ways to use technology and note that various classroom applications are consistent with what is currently known about effective learning experiences”, there is another side that warrants examination. I would like to approach the subject from a “devil’s advocate” position and examine the issues of technical effectiveness in the schools from the point of view of the technician rather th… Continue

Technology in the classroom - a discussion

There has been much discussion regarding the use of technology, particularly computers, in the classroom. The research has taken us on a tour of global social issues such as the achievement gap, the school resource gap, the gender gap in technology, science and mathematics, and yet, the research is still inconclusive as to the effectiveness of computers in regards to learning. We are often reminded that computers are simply another form of educational tool which can be used in the development of… Continue

Where are we going with technology?

In 1957, Marshall McLuhan, a noted educational futurist stated the following:

It’s natural today to speak of “audio and visual aids” to teaching, for we still think of the book as the norm, of other media as incidental. We also think of the new media – press, radio, movies, TV – as MASS MEDIA & think of the book as an individualistic form. Individualistic because it isolated the reader in silence & helped create the Western “I.” Yet it was the first product of mass production.

A great… Continue

Featured Graduate Student Scholarship Opportunities with ISU Faculty

Research Opportunity! Dr. Tinnerman will be needing graduate students in the near future to participate in a project involving the production of a video highlighting the use of collaboration tools in a face to face classroom setting. Research aids will help in video editing and helping with the coordination of the staging. Please see Dr. Tinnerman if you are willing to help. Participation will also give you the opportunity to co-author and article on the process.

Entry into positions of higher education is becoming an increasing competitive undertaking. Students finishing their doctoral work should also have taken the opportunity to begin their professional portfolio… this portfolio is often used by employers to determine the potential for scholarly activity on the part of the applicant. Many students leave their program of study with only their dissertation in hand. During the graduate years exists an excellent opportunity to present at conferences, publish in peer reviewed journals; collaborate with faculty in publication and research. All too often, graduate students do not take advantage of this opportunity nor do they realize the necessity of a research agenda when they apply for higher education jobs.

Welcome

One of the perks of graduate study is the opportunity to "rub elbows" with professors and professionals in higher education. It not only permits you an insight into the academic culture, but also provides a safe entry into the world of research and scholarly publication and presentation. Keeping this in mind, I have started this group. The group consists of both a brown bag series that meets in University Hall each month for lunch. These informal meetings are structured to encourage discussion around common topics of research interest. In turn, it is hoped that these discussions may spawn collaborative scholarship among the attendees. For those who are unable to attend the brown bag lunches, faculty members and graduate students have an added opportunity to participate in a social network that permits various factors to be shared between members. Both Faculty members and graduate students are asked to prepare a professional profile, which should include research interests and areas of expertise and interest. ISU graduate students are then invited to review this information so as to find individuals who may help them in professional scholarship, mentoring and locate individuals who may eventually serve on thesis and dissertation committees. Other information that will be provided include current calls for manuscripts, call for conference papers, announcement of conference opportunities and workshops that may be of interest to both faculty and graduate students alike. It is hoped, that in the future, Pod-casting will be added to this site as well. Please feel welcome to browse around and post your own ideas and opinions.

New Sencer Group Formed
Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) was initiated in 2001 under the National Science Foundation's CCLI national dissemination track. Since then, SENCER has established and supported an ever-growing community of faculty, students, academic leaders, and others to improve undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education by connecting learning to critical civic questions. SENCER is the signature program of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement. http://sencer.ning.com/
